So… let me get this straight….
After a few decades of careful selection, I manage to develop (read: not create) a variety of tomato that bears 8 pound fruits. I can sell the seeds for $3.00 per package of 25 seeds. The gardener I sell the seeds to can keep the seeds from the 8 pound fruits that he grows, plant them in his garden, and never have to pay me again.
A biotech firm re-engineers (read: not create) a variety of tomato to bear 8 pound fruit, sells those seeds for $3.00 for 25 seeds. Then that biotech firm refuses to let anyone plant the next generation from those 8 pound fruits, and even sues you if you do, because it says it has a patent on that variety and won’t let other men plant it unless you pony up to do so.
Make sense to you? Me neither. Give the link below a read and let me know what you think….
